FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP A PROOF OF SPIRITUAL FAITHFULNESS.

Have you asked yourself why the majority of those who opposed the new testament tithing as prescribed in 1 Corinthians 16;1-2 and Galatians 6:6 fine it difficult speaking in other tongues and unable to manifest the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:4-12 . 

  The answer is in their wrong attitude towards money . You cannot fully manifest the gifts of the Holy Spirit  if your passion for money exceeds that for God . 

Luke 16:11 (AMP) says:

"Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of earthly wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?"

This verse is part of Jesus’ teaching on stewardship, particularly in the parable of the unjust steward (Luke 16:1-13). It emphasizes the principle that how we handle material wealth reflects our spiritual integrity and determines whether we can be trusted with greater spiritual blessings.

1. MATERIAL VS. SPIRITUAL WEALTH

Some skeptics argue that Jesus promotes financial inequality or a "prosperity gospel." However, this verse does not glorify wealth but contrasts material possessions (temporary and earthly) with "true riches" (eternal and spiritual).

    Apologetically, we affirm that Jesus is not condemning wealth itself but teaching that financial stewardship is a test of our faithfulness.

2. FAITHFULNESS IN SMALL MATTERS

 "WHY WOULD GOD CARE ABOUT MONEY?"

The answer: Money is a test of character. If someone is unfaithful in small things like money, they are likely to be unfaithful in spiritual responsibilities. This aligns with Luke 16:10: “He who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much.”

3. GOD’S OWNERSHIP OF WEALTH

 Why would God concern himself with wealth.?

    All wealth belongs to God (Psalm 24:1). We are merely stewards, and how we manage it reflects our spiritual condition.

4. A RESPONSE TO ATHEISTIC MATERIALISM

    Atheists often argue that material wealth is the only "true riches."

    Luke 16:11 refutes this by asserting that there are greater riches beyond material wealth—namely, spiritual riches like wisdom, faith, and eternal life ( see gifts of the Spirit 1Corinthians 12:4-12)

5. COUNTERING THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL MISUSE

    Some false  prosperity preachers misuse this verse to claim that financial faithfulness automatically leads to wealth.

    However, the context shows that the true reward for financial faithfulness is not more money but spiritual responsibility in God's kingdom.

     Luke 16:11 teaches that handling money wisely is a prerequisite for greater spiritual blessings. Apologetically, this verse supports biblical stewardship, refutes materialism, and corrects misunderstandings about wealth in Christian life. It calls believers to be faithful stewards, proving their trustworthiness for eternal responsibilities.

     The Bible warns against self-centered ambition and pride. Philippians 2:3 (AMP) states, "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with an attitude of humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves." Unfortunately, many religious leaders in Africa have turned ministry into a competition, striving to be the biggest and most influential. This has placed an enormous financial and spiritual strain on churchgoers.

    A major symptom of this unhealthy competition is the relentless construction of religious edifices. Members are often manipulated into giving funds meant for family sustenance or business investments. The economic impact has been devastating—many families struggle, marriages break down, and individuals become disillusioned with the faith. This aligns with Colossians 2:23, which warns against excessive religious devotion that neglects practical needs.

   Despite grand promises of wealth through giving, Nigeria still has one of the lowest per capita incomes. Rather than promoting financial stewardship, many religious leaders exploit their followers, leading to widespread economic hardship. This culture of extravagance is also mirrored in the entertainment industry, where the pursuit of vainglory influences societal values.

   True humility in leadership means prioritizing the well-being of others and serving without selfish ambition. We should recognize others' achievements without striving to outshine them. Instead of seeking glory, religious leaders should focus on genuine service, fostering a faith that builds both spiritual and economic stability in society.

     God has established spiritual authority within His Church, and submission to it is not optional for believers. Romans 13:1-3 (AMP) states, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God [granted by His permission and sanction], and those which exist have been put in place by God.” This principle applies not only to civil authorities but also to spiritual leadership.

    The idea of a “free-spirited” Christian who resists authority is rebellion, which is equated with witchcraft. 1 Samuel 15:23 warns, “For rebellion is as [serious as] the sin of divination (fortune-telling), and disobedience is as [serious as] false religion and idolatry.” When individuals reject God-ordained leadership, they open doors to deception, disorder, and even demonic influence in the Church.

    God has provided pastors to guide His people. Jeremiah 3:15 says, “Then I will give you [spiritual] shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and [true] understanding.” Likewise, Ephesians 4:11-12 emphasizes that Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip and mature the Church. Maturity in Christ requires submission to these spiritual authorities.

   Hebrews 13:17 commands believers to “Obey your spiritual leaders and submit to them [recognizing their authority over you], for they are keeping watch over your souls.” Refusing to do so is rebellion against God’s divine order. True freedom is found in obedience to God’s structure, not in self-willed independence.

   In today’s fast-paced world, many people struggle to create time for God. However, the importance of setting aside time for worship, prayer, and Scripture meditation cannot be overstated. God instituted the Sabbath as a time for His people to draw closer to Him and each other (Exodus 20:8-10). This principle still holds today: when we prioritize God, our relationships with others flourish.

   Unfortunately, many modern churches have replaced in-depth Bible study with entertainment-driven activities. Some even teach that financial offerings can substitute for time spent in God’s presence, contradicting Ecclesiastes 5:1, which warns us to approach God with reverence, and Hebrews 10:25, which urges believers not to neglect meeting together.

   The seriousness of honoring God’s appointed time is seen in Numbers 15:32-36, where a man who violated the Sabbath paid the ultimate price. This account underscores how much God values our commitment to Him. In today’s world of endless distractions, especially social media, we must exercise spiritual discipline through fasting and prayer to ensure we spend quality time with God daily (Matthew 6:6, 1 Thessalonians 5:17).

   Our worship affects our relationships. When we neglect time with God, our marriages and families suffer. Just as time apart weakens relationships, lack of intimacy with God weakens our spiritual walk. To restore both, we must return to prioritizing God’s presence in our lives, knowing that when we seek Him first, everything else falls into place (Matthew 6:33).

Good -Life Devotional: BE NOT SLOTHFUL IN BUSINESS: A CALL TO DILIGENCE IN WORSHIP

Romans 12:11 commands, “Be not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” (KJV). The Greek word for “slothful” here is oknēros (ὀκνηρός), meaning lazy, hesitant, or lacking effort. This warning is not merely about work ethic but about our spiritual attitude toward all we do, including business and daily labor.

Work is an act of worship when done unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23). Worship is not just singing or praying; it requires diligence, commitment, and effort. The Greek word for worship, latreia (λατρεία), also means service. Thus, our business and job are expressions of worship, and to worship rightly, we must be diligent.

Hebrews 6:12 further exhorts, “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” Here, slothful is again nōthros (νωθρός), meaning sluggish or dull. A lack of diligence can make us spiritually ineffective, preventing us from receiving God’s promises.

Proverbs 22:29 states, “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” Diligence in our work honors God and brings promotion. Proverbs 10:4 warns, “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”

To be slothful in business is to be negligent in worship. True worship demands excellence and faithfulness. Let us work as unto the Lord, being fervent in spirit, diligent in service, and faithful in all things.

The mission of God’s servants is not to seek wealth or personal gain but to proclaim the gospel of righteousness and bring deliverance to those bound by sin. Isaiah 45:13 declares, “I have stirred up Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his ways smooth; he will build My city and let My exiles go, without any payment or reward,” says the Lord of hosts (AMP). This scripture emphasizes that divine assignments are not for financial profit but for fulfilling God’s purpose.

Unfortunately, many preachers today are tempted to pursue wealth and recognition rather than staying committed to their sacred calling. Like Gehazi in 2 Kings 5:20-26, who sought material gain from Naaman’s healing, some ministers prioritize financial rewards over the true gospel. This shift compromises the message of righteousness, leading to spiritual decline in many churches.

Jesus Christ provided a clear directive in Matthew 6:33, “But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also” (AMP). This means that as believers focus on God’s kingdom and His righteousness, their needs will be met by divine provision, not by manipulating the gospel for financial gain.

True servants of God are called to preach the gospel freely, trusting in God’s provision rather than seeking personal rewards. The liberation of souls must remain the highest priority, not wealth or worldly success.

Good-Life Devotional: PROSTITUTION AND WITCHCRAFT: A TRAP OF WICKEDNESS

   Prostitution is more than just a moral failing—it is a spiritual bondage that God equates with witchcraft. Nahum 3:4 (AMP) declares, "All because of the many acts of prostitution of the [enchanting] prostitute, the charming and well-favored one, the mistress of sorceries, who betrays nations by her acts of prostitution (idolatry) and families by her sorceries (witchcraft).” This verse links prostitution to sorcery, showing that it is not just a physical act but a tool of spiritual corruption.

   Leviticus 19:29 (AMP) warns, "Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, so that the land will not fall into prostitution and become full of wickedness." This sin defiles society, leading to moral decay, poverty, and judgment. One of the major reasons for the financial struggles of the Church in Africa is the widespread engagement of leaders in this sin. Many are ensnared in a web of witchcraft through prostitution, resulting in poor financial stewardship and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

   Proverbs 29:3 states, "A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but he who associates with [male] prostitutes wastes his wealth." This confirms that prostitution brings financial ruin. As Christians, we must pray for righteousness to prevail in our communities. Leaders should boldly condemn prostitution, while individuals should seek honest work, overcome laziness, and live within their means. Law enforcement must also act to curb this evil.

   God's judgment awaits prostitutes and those who support them (Hebrews 13:4, Revelation 21:8). Let us turn to Christ, seek purity, and walk in righteousness.
