The trap set for your destruction shall become a ladder for your promotion because of the anointing of God's favour upon you.
Good-Life Devotional: ALL THAT THE WORLD OFFERS CAN'T GIVE JOY
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Bible Text: 1 John 2:15–16
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15
The Apostle John warns believers against loving the world's sinful system and values. He identifies three channels through which worldly desires influence human conduct: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
1. THE LUST OF THE FLESH: This refers to uncontrolled physical appetites and sinful desires, including sexual immorality, drunkenness, gluttony and addiction. These desires seek gratification without regard for God's moral standards. Galatians 5:16 instructs believers to walk in the Spirit rather than fulfil the desires of the flesh.
2. THE LUST OF THE EYES: This is the covetous desire stimulated by what we see. Eve's temptation in Genesis 3:6 demonstrates how something attractive to the eyes can awaken forbidden desires. Advertising, materialism and social media can encourage discontentment and unhealthy comparisons.
3. THE PRIDE OF LIFE: This is the desire to establish personal worth through possessions, achievements, titles, influence and social status. Jesus warned against covetousness, declaring that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions (Luke 12:15).
Something does not become morally right simply because society accepts it. God's Word, not changing cultural opinions, establishes the ultimate standard of moral truth.
PRACTICAL FAITH APPLICATION: Examine your desires through Scripture. Resist covetousness, cultivate contentment, practise self-control and refuse to make worldly achievements your identity. Pursue the the divine purpose of preaching the gospel everyday ( Matthew 28:19-20)
REFLECTION:
The Christian is called to enjoy God's creation without becoming enslaved to the world's sinful values. True satisfaction comes from loving God, walking in holiness and finding identity in Jesus Christ. The world's attractions are temporary, but obedience to God has eternal value (1 John 2:17).
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive Him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation.
