HELP ME TO OBEY YOUR COMMANDMENTS (Part One:)

+ The Desire to Walk in God’s Ways+
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Text: Psalm 119:35–37
“Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to Your testimonies and not to dishonest gain. Turn my eyes away from looking at worthless things; preserve my life in Your ways.” — Psalm 119:35–37
David’s prayer reveals an important truth: knowing God’s commandments is not the same as having the strength to consistently obey them. He did not merely ask God to show him the right path; he asked God to make him walk in it.
God’s love is unconditional, but His blessings are connected to our willingness to walk according to His revealed will. Isaiah 1:19 says, “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land.” God’s grace does not abolish obedience; grace teaches and empowers us to live righteously (Titus 2:11–12).
David understood the weakness of human nature. The New Testament explains this struggle in Romans 7:14–25, where Paul describes the conflict between the desire to do what is right and the weakness of the flesh. Yet Paul does not conclude that obedience is impossible. He points to deliverance through Jesus Christ.
This is why David prayed, rather than boasting in his own strength. Jesus likewise said, “Watch and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation” (Matthew 26:41).
REFLECTION
Am I merely admiring God’s commandments, or am I asking God to help me obey them? What things are turning my eyes away from God’s ways?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation.
Father, help me to delight in Your commandments. Turn my heart away from worthless things and strengthen me by Your Spirit to walk in obedience. When my flesh is weak, help me depend upon Your grace rather than my own strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
