Good -Life Devotional: A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Text: Matthew 10:36; Luke 21:17; John 15:25
“And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.” — Matthew 10:36 (KJV)
Jesus Christ warned His disciples that commitment to the truth of the gospel could bring rejection, division, and hostility, even from members of their own households. The gospel exposes sin and calls humanity to repentance. Consequently, those who love darkness may hate those who expose their evil deeds (John 3:20).
Jesus declared that His disciples would be hated because they were not of the world (John 17:14). Some people will hate believers without a cause because their righteous conduct challenges their ungodly lifestyles (John 15:25). Nevertheless, we must not compromise the truth to gain human approval.
Scripture provides examples of opposition against God's servants. Miriam and Aaron spoke against their brother Moses, whom God had chosen to lead Israel (Numbers 12:1–10). God intervened and disciplined Miriam. Likewise, Psalm 89:23 declares God's opposition against the enemies of His anointed servant. God is a righteous Judge who defends His people and repays wrongdoing according to His justice.
Hosea 5:15 reveals God's purpose in withdrawing until His people acknowledge their offence and seek His face. Similarly, 2 Thessalonians 1:6–8 warns of God's righteous judgment against those who trouble His people and refuse to obey the gospel. However, believers must not rejoice in anyone's suffering but desire their repentance and salvation.
PRACTICAL FAITH APPLICATIONS: Stand firmly for biblical truth, even when relatives oppose you. Respond with love, humility, and patience. Do not retaliate or curse your persecutors; entrust judgment to God while praying for their repentance.
REFLECTION: Will you remain faithful to Christ when standing for truth costs you the approval of your household?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome rejection . Father, strengthen me to stand for Your truth despite rejection. Give me wisdom, patience, and love toward my persecutors. Defend me according to Your righteousness and lead those who oppose me to repentance, in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
