+Religious Laws Are Made For Man And Not Man For Religious Laws +
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Text: Mark 2:23–28: Galatians 2:16
In Mark 2:23–28, the Pharisees accused Jesus’ disciples of breaking the Sabbath because they plucked ears of corn while walking through the fields. Jesus answered by referring to David, who ate the consecrated bread when he and his companions were hungry (1 Samuel 21:1–6). He exposed their ignorance of Scripture and their failure to understand God's intention behind the law.
Jesus declared, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath” (Mark 2:27). He then affirmed His authority: “Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath” (Mark 2:28).
From an apologetics perspective, this passage demonstrates that Jesus did not treat Scripture carelessly. He corrected the Pharisees by interpreting the law according to its divine purpose rather than human traditions. Their problem was not their respect for God's law, but their legalistic interpretation that neglected mercy and human need (Matthew 12:7).
Furthermore, Jesus’ authority as Lord of the Sabbath reveals His unique position in God's redemptive plan. He is greater than human religious regulations and possesses authority to reveal God's will.
Galatians 2:16 teaches that no one is justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation is God's gift, not a reward for religious performance (Ephesians 2:8–9). However, grace does not encourage disobedience; it produces a life of righteousness (Titus 2:11–12).
REFLECTION
Am I trusting in Christ for justification, or relying on religious activities to earn God's acceptance? Do my interpretations of Scripture reflect God's mercy, truth, and purpose?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive Him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome guilt and condemnation. Lord Jesus, deliver me from legalism and religious hypocrisy. Help me understand Your Word correctly, trust in Your finished work, and walk in truth, mercy, and obedience. Amen.
