Good-Life Devotional: VESSELS OF HONOUR
+Understanding God’s House+
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Text: 2 Timothy 2:20–21
“If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.” — 2 Timothy 2:21 (KJV)
God desires every believer to become a vessel of honour, sanctified and useful for His service. In 2 Timothy 2:20–21, Apostle Paul compares God’s house to a great household containing vessels of gold, silver, wood, and clay. These vessels have different purposes, illustrating the importance of being prepared for the Master’s use.
God’s house represents His family, the Church, where believers are fellow citizens and members of His household (Ephesians 2:19–22). As members of God’s family, we are called to live lives that bring glory to His name. Being a vessel of honour is not merely about possessing spiritual gifts, talents, or positions in the Church; it is about maintaining a life of holiness, obedience, and faithfulness to God.
Paul declares that anyone who purges himself from dishonourable things will become a vessel of honour. This purification involves turning away from sin, rejecting ungodly practices, abandoning false teachings, and allowing God’s Word to transform our character. Through the Holy Spirit, we can develop attitudes and habits that reflect Christ.
God is not looking merely for gifted people but for clean vessels who are willing to obey Him. Our usefulness in His kingdom increases as we submit to His will and remain faithful in our daily conduct. No believer should consider himself unqualified for God’s service, because everyone can grow in holiness and become prepared for good works.
PRACTICAL FAITH APPLICATIONS
+Examine your life daily and repent of every known sin.
+Reject habits and relationships that encourage disobedience to God.
+Practise honesty, humility, love, and faithfulness at home, at work, and in the Church.
+Make yourself available for God’s service, even in small responsibilities.
REFLECTION
My usefulness to God depends not merely on my gifts but also on my character and obedience. I will allow God’s Word to cleanse me, reject dishonourable practices, and remain prepared for every good work He assigns to me.
PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive Him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to be an instrument of righteousness.
Father, cleanse my heart and make me a vessel of honour, sanctified and useful for Your service. Help me to walk in holiness, obey Your Word, and bring glory to Your name in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
