Good-Life Devotional:
HE GIVES MORE GRACE DOES NOT MEAN SUPERIORITY
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
It is important to understand the nature of God's grace and how it operates in the lives of believers. The bible says
"But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit, to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, 'God is opposed to the proud and haughty, but [continually] gives [the gift of] grace to the humble [who turn away from self-righteousness].'" (James 4:6, AMP)
Core Arguments:
1. ALL BELIEVERS HAVE EQUAL ACCESS TO GRACE
The Holy Spirit indwells every believer equally (1 Corinthians 12:13). However, the "more grace" mentioned in James 4:6 doesn't imply that some Christians inherently possess more grace than others by default. Instead, it points to an ongoing availability of God's grace for those who humble themselves. The current of a river easily carries the person whose iis in it and not by the bank of the river .You have to surrender or humble yourself to the river to enjoy it's current and resources. So is the lord .
Grace is not about quantity but about posture. A humble believer positions themselves to receive the fullness of what God provides.
Romans 5:2 reminds us that through faith, we have access to grace. The same Spirit dwells in all believers (Romans 8:11), meaning no one is disadvantaged when it comes to receiving the power of God.
2. THE SPIRIT'S WORK IS THE SAME, BUT RESPONSES MAY VARY
While all Christians have the same Spirit, their experience of God's grace can vary based on obedience and surrender.
Ephesians 4:30 warns believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit. When we walk in pride or self-reliance, we limit the Spirit's work in our lives.
Thus, the perception that one believer has "more power" or "grace" than another often reflects their willingness to humble themselves and walk in alignment with God’s will.
3. GOD’S GRACE EMPOWERS OBEDIENCE, NOT SUPERIORITY
James 4:6 shows that God actively resists the proud but extends grace to the humble. This isn't about God playing favorites; it's about God responding to the hearts of His people. Humility is key to accessing the empowering grace needed to overcome sin and live in His power.
This aligns with 2 Corinthians 12:9, where Paul speaks of God’s grace being sufficient in weakness. Every believer has access to this same sufficiency.
4. UNITY IN THE SPIRIT CONFIRMS EQUALITY
Ephesians 4:4-6 emphasizes that there is "one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism," which reinforces the idea that no believer has inherently more of God than another. The Spirit works to unite believers, not create hierarchies of grace or power.
In Conclusion James 4:6 does not suggest that some Christians possess more grace or power than others. Rather, it points to the continual need for humility to receive God's grace. The same Spirit dwells in all believers, empowering them equally. The difference lies in how each believer responds to God's invitation to humble themselves and live by the Spirit.
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and humility to serve and be fruitful in his vineyard .
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive grace for excellence.
