Good -Life Devotional: CHRISTIAN BUSINESS ETHICS, NATIONAL SECURITY, AND PROSPERITY
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Christian business ethics are foundational to the stability and prosperity of any nation. When integrity governs commerce, societies thrive; when corruption prevails, economic and social crises ensue. The Bible offers compelling examples that highlight the consequences of dishonesty in business and the blessings of ethical conduct.
Jacob and Laban serve as a cautionary tale. Both engaged in deceitful business practices—Jacob manipulated livestock breeding to his advantage (Genesis 30:37-43), while Laban repeatedly changed Jacob’s wages (Genesis 31:7). Their dishonesty led to conflict, forcing Jacob to flee. Although Jacob initially prospered, his descendants suffered, eventually becoming slaves in Egypt. This underscores that wealth gained through unethical means is unsustainable.
Similarly, in Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira attempted to deceive the early church regarding their financial contributions. Their immediate death demonstrated God's intolerance for corruption. This incident reinforced a culture of integrity in the early church, contributing to its rapid growth and prosperity (Acts 4:32-35). Honest business dealings foster trust, which is essential for economic and national security.
God does not bless corruption. Nations riddled with fraud and dishonesty often suffer from instability, poverty, and moral decay. The church should take the lead in promoting ethical business practices. Pastors and Christian leaders must hold corrupt individuals accountable, ensuring that believers conduct business with honesty and fairness (Proverbs 11:1).
Ultimately, national prosperity and security are linked to righteousness (Proverbs 14:34). The church must set the standard, demonstrating that God rewards integrity and punishes deceit.
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and the prevalence of righteousness in our businesses.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to prosper in adversity.
