Good -Life Devotional: THE SACRIFICE OF THE LORD: A BROKEN HEART AND A CONTRITE SPIRIT

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

True sacrifice before the Lord is not found in material offerings alone but in a heart that is broken and contrite. David declares in Psalm 51:17, “My sacrifice [the sacrifice acceptable] to God is a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart [broken with sorrow for sin, thoroughly penitent], such, O God, You will not despise” (AMP). Similarly, Psalm 34:18 assures us, “The Lord is near to the heartbroken and He saves those who are crushed in spirit [contrite in heart, truly sorry for their sin]” (AMP).

The Hebrew word for broken (שָׁבַר, shabar) means shattered, crushed, or completely broken down, while contrite (דָּכָא, dakah) signifies being crushed or deeply humbled. These words convey the idea of a heart that is broken before God, acknowledging sin, dependence, and a deep need for His grace.

When we give offerings—whether financial, time, or resources—it is a means of cultivating this spirit of brokenness. Giving requires humility, dependence on God, and recognition that all we have is from Him. The proud struggle with generosity, especially in supporting missions, because their self-sufficiency blinds them to their need for God’s grace.

However, God promises to revive the contrite heart. Isaiah 57:15 declares, “I dwell on the high and holy place, but also with the contrite and humble in spirit in order to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite [overcome with sorrow for sin]” (AMP). True revival and nearness to God come when we embrace the sacrifice He desires—a broken heart and a contrite spirit.

In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and a heart that is responsive to his commands .
