Good -Life Devotional: ACHIEVING AN EFFECTIVE ELECTORAL PROCESS IN A CORRUPT SYSTEM
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Corruption in systems of governance often undermines fairness, justice, and equity. However, Scripture provides wisdom for reform, even in flawed contexts. In Acts 6:1-7, the early church faced internal corruption—specifically, the neglect of the Hellenistic widows in the daily distribution of food. This partiality, a form of nepotism, threatened unity. The apostles responded not with denial or force, but with a Spirit-led solution: they initiated an electoral process. “Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3, AMP). This method emphasized character over connections.
Key lessons emerge here for navigating corrupt systems. First, transparency: the apostles allowed the people to participate in selecting leaders, curbing favoritism. Second, qualifications: spiritual maturity and wisdom, not wealth or influence, were the criteria. Third, delegation: those chosen were empowered to serve, and the apostles maintained focus on prayer and the Word. As a result, “the word of God continued to spread; the number of disciples increased greatly” (Acts 6:7).
Proverbs 29:2 reinforces this: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice…” Likewise, Deuteronomy 16:19 warns against perverting justice or showing partiality. Even within a corrupt system, integrity and godly leadership can bring renewal.
To achieve an effective electoral process, communities must prioritize righteousness, collective participation, and Spirit-led discernment—transforming corrupt systems from within, just as the early church did.
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and boldness to demand for a credible electoral process in our country.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome corruption.
