Good -Life Devotional:
A WAY THAT SEEMS RIGHT
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Proverbs 14:12 (AMP) warns, "There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, but its end is the way of death." This verse highlights the danger of human reasoning apart from God's wisdom. Many times, people act based on their own understanding, assuming they are making the right choices, only to find that their decisions lead to destruction.
A clear example is found in 2 Samuel 6:6-7. As King David brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah instinctively reached out to steady the Ark. However, God struck him dead instantly. While Uzzah’s action may have seemed reasonable, it directly violated God's command that only the Levites were to handle the Ark (Numbers 4:15). Uzzah’s error was not merely touching the Ark, but presuming that he could help God and act outside divine instructions.
It is against this backdrop that David later prayed in Psalm 19:13, "Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not rule over me." Presumptuous sins stem from pride—acting independently of God's guidance. Scripture warns that "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18). God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).
Instead of relying on our own wisdom, we must seek humility and submit to God's instructions. True wisdom comes from reverence for the Lord (Proverbs 9:10), and only by walking in humility can we avoid the deadly path of self-reliance.
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and humility to serve in his vineyard .
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome the deception of the enemy.
