Good -Life Devotional: FASTING AND PRAYER: BEYOND MEATS AND DRINKS

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

Fasting and prayer in Scripture are not centered on food restrictions or material gain but on spiritual transformation. Romans 14:17 declares that “the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (AMP). Worldly fasting often pursues fleshly desires—breakthroughs rooted in greed, pleasure, and self-exaltation. In contrast, Spirit-led fasting seeks alignment with God’s will, producing the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).

Jesus warned against reducing prayer and fasting to material pursuit. He said the Gentiles eagerly seek food and clothing, but believers are to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:32–33). This pursuit invites heaven’s culture to prevail on earth—justice, holiness, mercy, and truth. When righteousness rules, provision follows naturally. Isaiah 32:17 affirms that “the work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.” God’s order produces stability and progress.

Sadly, some false preachers encourage fasting primarily for money and possessions, fueling covetousness and corruption—an issue painfully visible in parts of Africa, including Nigeria. Yet Scripture teaches us to “set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above” (Colossians 3:2). True fasting humbles the soul (Psalm 35:13), breaks the yoke of injustice (Isaiah 58:6), and renews spiritual strength (Isaiah 40:31).

Therefore, fasting is not about meats and drinks; it is about becoming vessels through which God’s righteous culture transforms lives and nations.

In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and hunger for the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit

PRAYER; Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to preach Righteousness.
