THE RESULTS OF LOVING THE WORLD ABOVE GOD

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Text: 2 Timothy 3:1–5
“Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of [outward] godliness (religion), although they have denied its power.” — 2 Timothy 3:4–5 (AMP).
Paul warns that in the last days, society will experience perilous times because humanity increasingly rejects God's authority. He identifies characteristics such as selfishness, materialism, boasting, blasphemy, disobedience, ingratitude, unholiness, hatred, betrayal and pride.
The progression reveals a deeper spiritual problem: self-love produces materialism, pride encourages rebellion, and rebellion produces moral corruption and religious hypocrisy. People may maintain religious appearances while rejecting the transforming power of godliness.
Loving the world means adopting values that compete with God's righteousness. Technology may advance human abilities, but it cannot independently transform the human heart. Humanity needs more than education, civilization and technological development; it needs spiritual regeneration.
Jeremiah 17:9 exposes the deceitfulness of the human heart, while 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares that anyone in Christ becomes a new creation. The Gospel addresses humanity's fundamental problem by bringing transformation through Jesus Christ.
PRACTICAL FAITH APPLICATION: Christians must examine their own lives rather than merely condemn society. We must reject selfishness, materialism, pride and ungodly pleasures while allowing the Holy Spirit to develop Christlike character in us. Genuine Christianity is demonstrated through transformed living, not religious appearance.
REFLECTION
Let us honestly examine our hearts. Are we becoming more selfish, materialistic and pleasure-driven? Has our devotion to God been replaced by worldly ambitions? Our Christianity must be more than outward profession; it must demonstrate the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive Him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome corruption.
Father, deliver my heart from worldly desires. Let my life demonstrate genuine godliness and reflect the character of Jesus Christ. Amen.
