Good -Life Devotional: TREASURE IN EARTHEN VESSELS
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Bible Text: 2 Corinthians 4:7–12
“But we have this precious treasure in earthen vessels [of clay], so that the grandeur and surpassing greatness of the power will be shown to be from God and not from us.” — 2 Corinthians 4:7 (AMP)
The treasure in earthen vessels represents the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ entrusted to frail human beings. Like ordinary clay pots, Christians experience weakness, afflictions, persecution, and challenges. However, our limitations do not diminish the power of God working within us.
Paul honestly describes the Christian experience: afflicted, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:8–9). Christianity does not promise a suffering-free life; rather, it reveals God's sustaining power amid suffering.
Critics sometimes argue that suffering disproves God's existence. However, the existence of suffering does not logically establish that God is absent. Christianity acknowledges the reality of evil (which is behind suffering in the world ), affirms human life's eternal value, and points to the cross, where Jesus Christ entered human suffering to accomplish our redemption. Through His death and resurrection, suffering and death do not have the final word (Romans 8:18; 1 Corinthians 15:54–57).
Our weakness provides an opportunity for God's surpassing power to become evident. The treasure is not our human ability but the life of Christ working in us. Even when circumstances seem overwhelming, God's grace strengthens us to endure faithfully.
REFLECTION
Reflect on the truth that suffering does not necessarily indicate God's absence. The cross demonstrates His love, while Christ's resurrection gives believers enduring hope. Consider how your trials can reveal God's sustaining power rather than destroy your faith. Remember that the weakness of the vessel does not diminish the value of the treasure it carries.
LIFE APPLICATION
Do not measure God's presence solely by the absence of problems. Trust Him through trials, remain faithful to the gospel, and allow Christ's life to shine through your weakness.
Further Scriptures: Romans 8:35–39; James 1:2–4; 1 Peter 4:12–14; Hebrews 12:1–3.
PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome stagnation and confusion.
