Good -Life Devotional: BETTER TO BE UNDERESTIMATED AND YET PRODUCTIVE THAN PROUD AND WITHOUT FOOD TO EAT
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
The Folly of Pride and the Wisdom of Humility
Proverbs 12:9 (AMP) states: "Better is he who is lightly esteemed and has a servant than he who boasts of honor [but lacks bread]." This verse challenges the cultural obsession with status and pride. It teaches that it is better to be underestimated yet productive, than to pretend to be important and suffer lack. Many have fallen into poverty because they refuse humble beginnings or despise so-called "menial" jobs.
Many preachers would rather be in poverty claiming to be called to a full time ministry instead of working as commanded in 2 Thesselonians 3:6-10 . This is the major reason behind the increase in scadals and corruption in the church in Nigeria. Pride often hinders progress. Ecclesiastes 10:15 says, "The labor of fools wearies him, for he does not even know how to go to the city," indicating ignorance and pride can make simple tasks seem beneath someone. Yet Scripture repeatedly exalts humility. James 4:6 declares, "God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble." Likewise, 1 Peter 5:6 urges, "Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time."
Moses is a profound example. Though raised in Pharaoh’s palace, he was not too proud to become a shepherd in Midian (Exodus 3:1). That season of humility prepared him for leadership. Joseph, too, embraced servitude and imprisonment before ruling Egypt (Genesis 41:41).
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, washed His disciples' feet (John 13:14–15), teaching that greatness lies in service.
Proverbs 12:9 affirms that dignity isn’t in titles or impressions, but in honest labor and humility. Christians must reject ego-driven laziness. Starting small with God’s favor leads to lasting success (Zechariah 4:10).
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and humility to work.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to be humble .
