Good -Life Devotional: BE PERFECT, EVEN AS YOUR FATHER IS PERFECT

Text: Matthew 5:48; Matthew 19:21

  Jesus said, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). Biblical perfection does not mean that a Christian becomes incapable of making mistakes or becomes equal to God in His absolute perfection. It speaks of spiritual maturity, completeness, and wholehearted devotion to God.

   In Matthew 19:21, Jesus challenged the rich young ruler to overcome his attachment to earthly wealth: “Sell that thou hast, and give to the poor... and come and follow me.” The issue was not merely possessing riches but allowing riches to possess the heart. A disciple must be willing to use his resources in serving God and humanity rather than making material wealth his master.

   Luke 8:14 warns that the cares, riches, and pleasures of life can choke the word, preventing spiritual maturity and fruitfulness. An unhealthy desire for riches can therefore hinder our pursuit of Christlike perfection.

   Paul says, “Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect” (1 Corinthians 2:6). This indicates that there were believers who had reached a measure of spiritual maturity. Likewise, Paul exhorted the church to be perfect or mature: “Be perfect” (2 Corinthians 13:11), and Philippians 3:15 says, “Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded.”

   Perfection is therefore a Christian journey. We continually surrender our desires, possessions, ambitions, and character to Christ until His nature is increasingly reflected in us.

REFLECTION: What possesses your heart—Christ or material things?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive Him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation. Lord Jesus, deliver me from every attachment that hinders my spiritual maturity. Teach me to use my resources for Your glory and the good of others. Amen.
