Good-Life Devotional: WITHHOLDING THE ROD OF CORRECTION LEADS TO DISASTER

“Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.” — Proverbs 15:10

    Correction is one of God’s instruments for preserving our lives and guiding us toward righteousness. Proverbs 15:10 gives a serious warning: those who reject correction and hate reproof place themselves on a destructive path. Therefore, we should learn to appreciate correction rather than despise it, because godly correction is intended for our good.

    Children are still developing wisdom, understanding, and experience. They do not always recognize the consequences of their choices. Proverbs 22:15 teaches that foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, and Proverbs 23:13–14 instructs parents not to withhold appropriate discipline. The “rod” represents firm, purposeful discipline—not cruelty, abuse, or uncontrolled anger. Discipline should correct behaviour, establish boundaries, and teach responsibility.

   Parents and guardians should therefore not be afraid to give children stern but loving correction when necessary. When foolishness, stubbornness, or persistent disobedience is tolerated, those behaviours can become destructive patterns in adulthood. Proper discipline helps remove them while there is still opportunity to teach the child.

    The same principle applies to our relationship with God. “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth” (Hebrews 12:6). God disciplines those He loves because He desires their maturity and righteousness.

REFLECTION: Do I receive correction with gratitude, or do I resist it because of pride?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive Him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to embrace discipline. 

   Father, give me a teachable heart and wisdom to discipline children with love, patience, firmness, and godly understanding. Help us never to confuse discipline with anger or abuse. Amen.
