Good+Life Devotional : SANCTIFY THE LORD IN YOUR HEART AND BE READY TO DEFEND THE GOSPEL ( APOLOGETICS )
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
"But in your hearts set Christ apart [as holy—acknowledging Him, giving Him first place in your lives] as Lord. Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope and confident assurance [elicited by faith] that is within you, yet do it with gentleness and respect." —1 Peter 3:15 (AMP)
Apologetics is the rational defense of the Christian faith. In 1 Peter 3:15, believers are commanded to always be ready to give an answer—a defense (Greek: apologia)—to anyone who questions their faith. This does not merely involve debating but presenting the truth about Christ with clarity, reason, and love.
The foundation of apologetics begins with setting apart Christ as Lord in our hearts. This implies full submission to His authority, which fuels a life that reflects the gospel. Our godly conduct attracts curiosity from unbelievers, opening doors for conversations about our hope.
The "hope" Peter refers to is the living hope we have through Christ’s resurrection (1 Peter 1:3). Christians must be prepared to explain why they believe in Jesus, the truth of His resurrection, the reliability of Scripture, and the reality of salvation and eternal life.
However, our defense must be done with gentleness and reverence. Arrogance or hostility undermines the gospel. True apologetics reflects Christ's humility and love, ensuring that even if people reject the message, they can’t deny the grace with which it was delivered.
Thus, 1 Peter 3:15 teaches that apologetics is not just about knowledge, but also about holiness, readiness, and Christlike character.
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and understanding of the mysteries of the gospel.
PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to resist the devil .
