Good -Life Devotional: CHRISTIANITY DOES NOT PROMISE A CONFLICT FREE LIFE

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

In 1 Thessalonians 2:18, the Apostle Paul writes, “For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us” (AMP).

This verse offers important insight into the biblical worldview of spiritual conflict and divine purpose. Paul does not attribute his delay to chance, logistics, or mere human opposition, but to an intelligent, personal adversary—Satan. This affirms the Christian claim that evil is not simply an abstract force but a real, opposing will that resists God’s redemptive work.

Critics often argue that belief in Satan is a pre-scientific explanation for hardship. However, Scripture presents a balanced view: God is sovereign, yet human responsibility and spiritual opposition coexist. Paul’s statement aligns with Job 1:12, where Satan operates within limits set by God, and with Daniel 10:13, where angelic conflict delayed an answer to prayer. These passages collectively demonstrate that spiritual resistance does not negate God’s power but reveals the reality of an unseen realm.

Furthermore, 1 Thessalonians 2:18 does not undermine God’s goodness. Paul later acknowledges that God can overrule satanic hindrance for greater purpose (Romans 8:28). Satan may delay, but he cannot ultimately defeat God’s plan. This is reinforced in 1 Corinthians 16:9, where Paul notes that open doors for ministry often come with “many adversaries.”

Apologetically, this verse explains why sincere believers may face obstacles while obeying God’s will. Christianity does not promise a conflict-free life but offers a coherent explanation for resistance, suffering, and delay—while grounding hope in Christ’s final victory (Colossians 2:15).

In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and resilience and faith in the face of crisis .

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to resist evil .
