CONFRONT THE PESSIMIST WITH THE WORD OF GOD
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Pessimism is not a harmless mindset; it is often a subtle weapon used by Satan to keep God’s people trapped under fear, passivity, and bad governance. Pessimists rarely carry the true interest of the people at heart. Like Sanballat and Tobiah in Nehemiah’s day, they discourage progress by magnifying obstacles and minimizing God’s power. Scripture teaches us to confront such voices with the Word of God, not human reasoning.
When young David faced Goliath, he was first confronted not by the giant, but by the pessimism of his own brothers (1 Samuel 17:28–33). They judged the situation by past defeats and natural strength. David, however, encouraged himself in the Lord, recalling God’s faithfulness in delivering him from the lion and the bear. His confidence was rooted in God’s Word and covenant, not in visible circumstances—and victory followed.
Pessimists judge by carnal knowledge and historical failure, but God declares, “Behold, I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah 43:19, AMP). God promises to make a way in the wilderness. The Hebrew word for wilderness, midbar, refers to a desolate place, yet it is also connected to dabar—“to speak.” Even in barren and unfavorable conditions, God speaks direction and creates pathways where none existed.
Though planning and strategy have value, our ultimate confidence must be in the Lord (Psalm 20:7; Proverbs 3:5–6). Remarkably, God even caused David to later find refuge among the Philistines—Goliath’s own people—showing that His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8–9).
We live by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Therefore, we must resist every pessimistic proposition that exalts itself against God’s truth (2 Corinthians 10:3–5). When faith speaks, victory is assured (1 John 5:4).
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and boldness to overcome opposing voices.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power overcome the fear of failure.
