Good -Life Devotional: ULTIMATE BENEFICIARIES OF FOREIGN LOANS TO AFRICA (Part 2)
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
4. CORRUPT POLITICAL ELITES
In some nations, portions of foreign loans are diverted through corruption to offshore accounts and through inflated contracts, and private enrichment.
The Bible strongly rebukes corrupt leadership: “Your rulers are rebels and companions of thieves; everyone loves bribes and runs after gifts.” — Isaiah 1:23 (AMP)
“Moreover, you shall select from all the people competent men… men who are trustworthy and hate dishonest gain.” — Exodus 18:21 (AMP)
5. FINANCIAL MARKETS AND PRIVATE LENDERS
Private lenders and global financial markets often profit through:
Interest payments, Debt restructuring
Currency manipulation, Long-term dependency
The scripture in Ecclesiastes describes economic oppression that can occur in fallen systems:
“If you see oppression of the poor and denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be shocked at the sight.” — Ecclesiastes 5:8 (AMP)
WHO OFTEN SUFFERS? Usually:
The Citizens, Farmers resulting in high cost of food , The Youths become disadvantaged and poor resulting in increased criminality, Small businesses fail due to increase in the cost of services and production , Marriages fail and singles cannot marry due to poverty caused by such loans .The Future generations has no hope as the are born into poverty with debts hanging over their necks .
As governments repay debts, citizens may experience: Higher taxes
Inflation, Reduced healthcare and education spending, Unemployment
The Bible repeatedly calls leaders to defend people, not exploit them:
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.” — Proverbs 31:8–9 (AMP)
“He who oppresses the poor taunts and insults his Maker, but he who is kind and merciful to the needy honors Him.” — Proverbs 14:31 (AMP)
BIBLICAL BALANCE
Not all foreign loans are evil. In some cases, they help build roads, hospitals, schools, power systems, and infrastructure. The real issue is:
transparency, wise stewardship, accountability, avoiding corruption,
and ensuring that borrowing benefits the people rather than enslaving future generations.
Joseph in Egypt is an example of wise economic planning during crisis in Book of Genesis 41, showing that financial management can preserve nations when guided by wisdom and integrity.
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance and advantage.” — Proverbs 21:5 (AMP)
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and for the removal of corrupt leaders and for godly leadership in our nation.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as Lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to walk in integrity.
