6 WAYS TO PREVENT MARITAL COLLAPSE IN TIMES OF ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS DUE TO BAD GOVERNANCE

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

Psalms 37:19

" They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied."

There are three reasons a marriage suffers untold hardship, they are 1) wrong personal choices 2) the wrong choices of persons related to us and 3) bad governance.

The first two causes are within our control and we can make the necessary changes required to bring about an improvement in our circumstances but not with bad governance. Bad governance is beyond our individual control and requires deliverance through God's intervention.

Psalm 37:19 says the lord will satisfy us with provisions in difficult times , as we follow his directions . There are steps which can be taken to avoid  being a casualty of the hardships as a result of bad governance. They include the following:

1. Pray Together for Guidance

In times of economic hardship, seeking God’s guidance is essential. Prayer ( in tongues ) strengthens your bond and invites God’s wisdom into your decisions. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally…” (James 1:5).

1 Corinthians 14:4

" He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; .."

The word 'edifieth ' is the Greek word :oikodomeō' it means to be a house builder that is construct or (figuratively) confirm:. When you speak in tongues you are building your marriage and confirming it.

2. Practice Contentment

In tough times, learning to be content is key to maintaining peace in your marriage. Trust that God will provide what you need. “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).

Psalms 131:1

," LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.".    If necessary move into a smaller affordable house and change children's schools to what you can afford . You will be happier and healthier earn more respect .

3. Be Good Stewards of Finances

Budget wisely and avoid unnecessary expenses. Avoid emotional and egocentric purchases or expenses . Ask the lord to help you change church or club if it is so much of a financial burden . Unwise involvement in church and other social activities is a major cause in marital failures. Giving should be a cheerful and not sorrowful experience. Stewardship is about being faithful with what you have. “Moreover, it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2).

4. Support Each Other Emotionally

Economic stress can create tension. Stay emotionally supportive, lifting each other up with , hugs and kisses and sharing relevant bible verses, psalms and worship songs and “Two are better than one… if one falls, the other can help” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Useful psalms include Psalm 34, Psalm 70, psalm 71, psalm 91

5. Maintain Open Communication

Avoid using harsh and  offensive words, Think before you speak .Respect each other's opinions . Discuss your financial situation openly , respectfully and honestly. “Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in an abundance of counselors, there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14).

6. Trust God for Provision

Finally, trust that God will meet your needs even in difficult times. Demonstrate your trust in God through giving to the poor and your spiritual leader seeking their counsel and prayers every week as guided by the Holy Spirit “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory” (Philippians 4:19).

Proverbs 11:24

"There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty."

Apostle Paul speaking to those who sent him financial help in Philippians 4:18

" But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God."

Your offerings make you smell good spiritually.

Trust God for financial gifts , bonuses , promotions opportunities to make money , good bargain on very expensive items and money -saving  kind gestures.

In our daily prayers seek for divine intervention for married friends and relatives and for help for the singles and for the deliverance of your country from bad governance.

PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome poverty.
