Good -Life Devotional:

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE HUMAN SOUL AFTER DEATH

BY Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

The soul is considered the source of consciousness, identity, morality, and emotion. It is often believed to be eternal, transcending physical death and representing the true self. As you read this now there is a voice reading with a human voice and either approving or disapproving . It does not eat , drink , sleep , defecate. It consists of the senses of smell, taste, touch , sight and hearing. It lives forever   .

The fellow in Luke 16;19-32  felt the pains of hell and so will the unbeliever .

The question of what happens to the human soul after death is one that has been debated and interpreted in different ways within Christian theology. The Bible offers several passages that provide insight into this mystery. Below are some key concepts and verses that address what happens to the soul after death:

1. THE SOUL GOES TO BE WITH GOD TO AWAIT JUDGMENT

The Bible suggests that upon death, the soul either goes to be with God or awaits judgment. This is often referred to as the separation of the soul from the body, and the righteous are believed to be in the presence of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:8: "We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord."

This verse is often interpreted to mean that believers' souls go to be with the Lord immediately upon death.

Philippians 1:23: "I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far."

The Apostle Paul expresses his desire to leave this life and be with Christ, implying that the soul of a believer is with Christ after death.

2. THE SOUL SLEEPS OR RESTS UNTIL THE RESURRECTION

Some interpretations of Scripture suggest that the soul "sleeps" or rests until the final resurrection at the end of time, at which point everyone will be judged.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14: "Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him."

John 11:11: Jesus said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

This phrase "fallen asleep" has been interpreted as a metaphor for death, implying that those who have died are in a state of rest.

3. JUDGMENT AFTER DEATH

The Bible also teaches that after death comes judgment. The soul will face either eternal life or eternal separation from God based on one's relationship with Christ.

Hebrews 9:27: "Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment."

Matthew 25:46: "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

4. THE RESURRECTION AND ETERNAL LIFE

At the final resurrection, the Bible speaks of a time when bodies will be raised and reunited with their souls, and all will stand before God's judgment.

1 Corinthians 15:52: "In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

John 5:28-29: "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned."

It is safe to say from these passages, it is clear that the Bible presents the soul as continuing beyond physical death, either in the immediate presence of God or resting until the resurrection and final judgment. Believers look forward to eternal life with God, while those who reject Him face eternal separation.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to preach the gospel.
