Emotionalism: A Hindrance to Emotional Intelligence

Emotionalism, the tendency to be governed by emotions rather than reason, can often hinder emotional intelligence (EQ), which is the ability to understand, manage, and use emotions in a constructive way. Emotional intelligence calls for self-control, empathy, and wise decision-making, while emotionalism can lead to impulsive reactions and clouded judgment.

This is the reason behind the increase in divorce cases and more aging unmarried persons as marriage roles are being redefined thus  stripping men of their spiritual authority and handing it over to women and children.. The bible says Isaiah 3:12 "As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths."  The woman is not the head of the family but the man regardless of her status in the society.

The result of this anomaly is the prevalence of successful women without husbands and increased tendency for polygamy. The bible says Isaiah 4:1

" And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.'. Emotionalism results in emotional and physical abuse in marriages and relationships.

The Bible addresses the dangers of uncontrolled emotions. Proverbs 29:11 says, "A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back." This verse illustrates the importance of controlling our emotional impulses, a key element of emotional intelligence. Emotionalism, on the other hand, disregards wisdom, leading to poor decisions and strained relationships.

Additionally, James 1:19 advises, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." Emotional intelligence encourages patience, understanding, and reflection, whereas emotionalism often leads to reactive anger, which can harm interactions and disrupt peace.

By leaning on biblical principles ( such as Galatians 5;22-23 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-7) , we can avoid emotionalism and cultivate emotional intelligence, which leads to healthier relationships, better decision-making, and a more balanced life aligned with God’s wisdom. Emotional intelligence is not about suppressing emotions but managing them in a way that honors God and fosters growth.

In our daily prayers seek to be filled with the fruits of the Holy Spirit and long for a healthy appetite for God's word.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to walk in love .
