Good -Life Devotional:

MORTIFY THE DEEDS OF THE BODY

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

The phrase "mortify the deeds of the body" refers to putting to death sinful desires and actions that conflict with the Spirit's work within us. Romans 8:13 teaches that through the Spirit, believers are called to "put to death the deeds of the body" to live in obedience to God. Colossians 3:5 echoes this, urging Christians to “put to death” sinful inclinations such as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and greed. Similarly, Galatians 5:19 lists the "acts of the flesh" that oppose spiritual living, and 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 highlights the importance of self-discipline, comparing the Christian life to a race where only those who exhibit control over their bodies and desires will obtain the prize.

Fasting and prayer are powerful spiritual disciplines that aid in this process. Acts 14:23 shows the early church leaders fasting and praying to seek God's guidance, demonstrating that these practices strengthen believers to resist sin and submit to the Spirit. Peter, in Acts 10:30, fasted to prepare his heart for God's revelation, while Anna, in Luke 2:36-37, exemplified a life of devotion through fasting and prayer.

By denying the flesh through fasting, the believer brings the body into submission, creating space for the Spirit to work more fully. Prayer strengthens resolve and invites the power of God to overcome sinful tendencies, helping the believer to walk in the Spirit and mortify the deeds of the body. Together, these disciplines help cultivate a life of holiness, obedience, and spiritual victory.

In your daily prayers seek for a healthy appetite for God's word and the strength to overcome temptation.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation.
