Good-Life Devotional:

EMOTIONALISM IS NOT SPIRITUALITY

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

Romans 8:6 "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.'

Emotionalism and biblical spirituality are often confused, but they are fundamentally different. Emotionalism is the natural human response to spiritual matters, driven by feelings and external expressions, rather than by the Spirit of God. This approach may appear spiritual, but it lacks the depth and discernment that true spirituality offers. It is like hugging or kissing yourself and wondering why you don't feel loved and warm.

According to 1 Corinthians 2:12-14, biblical spirituality is rooted in receiving and understanding the things of God through His Spirit. The passage states that the natural person cannot accept the things of the Spirit because they are spiritually discerned. Emotionalism relies on human senses and reactions, which can cloud true understanding of God's Word.

In contrast, biblical spirituality involves a deeper, Spirit-led comprehension. Jesus emphasizes this in John 6:63, where He says, "The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life." The flesh is powerless to produce spiritual truth, as John 3:6 says, "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit."

Moreover, Matthew 16:17 highlights that spiritual revelation comes only from God. Peter’s confession of Christ’s divinity was not revealed by flesh and blood but by the Father, affirming that spiritual insight transcends emotional responses.

Emotionalism refers to a focus on emotions, often prioritizing them as the primary source of meaning or understanding in various contexts. The term can be applied to multiple areas, such as art, philosophy, or personal behavior, and typically highlights the importance of emotional experiences over rational or logical approaches.

In Personal Behavior: Someone who practices emotionalism might react more strongly based on how they feel rather than rational thought. This could lead to heightened sensitivity or impulsive actions driven by emotions rather than contemplation or planning.

Emotionalism is usually manifested through, over - devotion to church activities, shaking your body , shedding tears while singing religious songs or praying and the so - called " falling under the anointing ' None of the disciples who saw jesus Christ ( the anointing and anointer) face to face fell under the anointing. Abraham, Moses , Elijah , Elisha  never did , You must not fall to be anointed. The anointing is already in you ( John15;16, 1John 2;27)

Emotionalism is an art and sooner or later all acting must come to an end . These are the people who abandon the faith , claiming Jesus Christ is not real out of frustration.

You can't move God with human emotions to do anything . Faith is a rational proposition .

In your daily prayers seek for the opening of your inner eyes to understand scriptures and for a healthy appetite for God's word.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to preach the gospel.
