POINT OF NO RETURN

You shall not be disgraced because of the anointing of God's favour upon you.

Good -Life Devotional: POINT OF NO RETURN

By Rev. Michael Benson Ajayi

Luke 9:62 (AMP) – “Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’”

Jesus spoke these words to a man who desired to follow Him but requested a delay to settle family matters. Christ’s response was not a dismissal of family honor—Scripture clearly commands honoring parents (Exodus 20:12). Rather, it was a revelation about divided loyalty. In first-century Palestine, plowing required unwavering focus. If a farmer looked back, the furrows became crooked, and the harvest was jeopardized. Jesus used this vivid agricultural imagery to teach a spiritual truth: discipleship demands undivided devotion.

Some object, saying Jesus was harsh. Yet His words clarify eternal priorities. When allegiance to Christ competes with any earthly attachment, Christ must come first (Matthew 6:33). This is not cruelty but clarity. Others argue Christianity demands blind loyalty. On the contrary, Jesus urged would-be followers to count the cost (Luke 14:28). Biblical commitment is informed, voluntary, and rooted in truth.

Nor does this verse promote fanaticism. Genuine devotion produces the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). A focused life in Christ brings moral stability, not extremism.

Discipleship requires priority. Christ must have preeminence over comfort, ambition, and reputation (Colossians 1:18). A divided heart produces instability—“a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8 AMP). Looking back symbolizes attachment to former securities, sinful patterns, or fear-driven living.

Being “fit” for the kingdom does not mean perfection; it means readiness, faithfulness, and steadfast obedience. There is a sacred “point of no return” in true discipleship—a decisive surrender where retreat is no longer an option.

Life Application:

• What distractions are pulling your heart away from Christ?

• Are you fully surrendered or partially committed?

• What habits must change to maintain spiritual focus?

Fix your eyes forward. The plow is in your hands.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation.
