MERCY REJOICES AGAINST JUDGMENT

The evil verdict against you shall be overturned because of the anointing of God's favour upon you.

Good -Life Devotional: MERCY REJOICES AGAINST JUDGMENT

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

James 2:13 says, “For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.” The Greek phrase translated “rejoices against” is katakaucháomai, meaning “to boast over, to glory over, or to triumph over.” It conveys the idea that mercy has a victorious power—it surpasses judgment when both are rightly applied.

God is not saying that Christians should never judge or criticize sin. That would contradict 1 Corinthians 6:2, which says, “Do you not know that the saints shall judge the world?” Believers are called to be a moral compass, shining as lights in a corrupt generation (Philippians 2:15). James teaches that mercy and faith must be expressed in deeds of compassion (James 2:15–16). True faith is not passive—it feeds the hungry, clothes the naked, and comforts the afflicted (Matthew 25:35–36).

However, mercy does not cancel the need for rebuke. Scripture commands, “Them that sin rebuke before all” (1 Timothy 5:20), and “rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith” (Titus 1:13). Ecclesiastes 8:11 warns that when judgment is delayed, evil increases. This is evident in Africa today, where corruption thrives despite the proliferation of churches, because many preachers fear losing crowds instead of making disciples (Matthew 28:19).

True mercy calls sinners to repentance, not comfort in sin. When Christians balance compassion with correction, mercy truly rejoices against judgment—bringing redemption instead of ruin.

In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and boldness to rebuke sinners .

PRAYER; Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to preach righteousness.
