The Essence of Christian Vigilance

 By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

Isaiah 62:6

I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,

Christian vigilance is not merely a passive observance but an active state of spiritual readiness and alertness. It entails being vigilant in prayer, steadfast in faith, and discerning in actions. The Bible implores believers to be vigilant in various aspects of their lives, emphasizing the importance of remaining watchful against spiritual pitfalls and worldly temptations.

In 1 Peter 5:8, believers are urged to "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." This verse underscores the need for Christians to be alert and vigilant against the schemes of the enemy. Similarly, Ephesians 6:18 exhorts believers to "Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people." Vigilant prayer is essential in staying connected to God and seeking His guidance and protection.

Moreover, Christian vigilance involves being discerning in one's actions and decisions. Romans 12:2 advises believers, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." By aligning oneself with God's Word and seeking His will, Christians can navigate through life's challenges with wisdom and discernment.

Jesus himself emphasized the importance of vigilance in spiritual matters. In Matthew 26:41, He cautions His disciples, "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." This admonition highlights the constant battle between the desires of the flesh and the call to spiritual vigilance.

In conclusion, Christian vigilance is an integral aspect of the believer's journey, characterized by prayerful alertness, discernment, and steadfastness in faith. By remaining vigilant, Christians can withstand the trials and temptations of the world while staying rooted in their faith and trust in God.
