Good -Life Devotional: THE GOD WHO JUSTIFIES THE UNGODLY (NOT BY MERIT)
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Romans 4:3–5 reveals a profound truth at the heart of the gospel: “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted unto him for righteousness… to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” This passage dismantles every human attempt to earn righteousness and establishes God’s method—justification by faith.
Apologetically, this text answers a major objection: How can a just God declare the ungodly righteous? The answer lies not in ignoring sin, but in addressing it through Christ. God’s justice is not compromised; it is fulfilled in the substitutionary work of Jesus. As Romans 3:26 declares, God is “just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” The cross is where justice and mercy meet.
Abraham serves as the prototype. Before the Law, rituals, or religious systems existed, he was declared righteous simply by believing God (Genesis 15:6). This proves righteousness is not tied to religious performance but to faith. David echoes this in Psalm 32:1–2, celebrating the blessedness of the man whose sins are forgiven apart from works.
This truth humbles human pride. No one qualifies by merit (Ephesians 2:8–9). It also offers hope—God does not wait for us to become godly before justifying us. He justifies the ungodly who believe.
Therefore, your standing with God is not based on your past, your failures, or your efforts, but on your faith in Christ. Having been justified, we now have peace with God (Romans 5:1).
Rest in this: the God who justifies the ungodly has declared you righteous through faith.
PRAYER: Heavenly forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome guilt and condemnation.
