Good-Life Devotional:
APOLOGETICS ON THE TRINITY
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
(DEFENDING THE BIBLICAL DOCTRINE OF ONE GOD IN THREE PERSONS)
1. The Objection:
"The word ‘Trinity’ is not in the Bible!"
Response:
That’s true — the word isn’t found in Scripture, but the doctrine clearly is. Just as the word "Bible" is not in the Bible, the concept is taught throughout. The Trinity means one God (Deuteronomy 6:4) who eternally exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).
2. The Objection:
"How can God be three and one at the same time? That’s a contradiction!"
Response:
It would be a contradiction if we said God is three in the same way He is one. But that’s not the case. Christians believe:
God is one in essence (what He is),
and three in person (who He is).
This is a mystery, not a contradiction — just as light is one substance but can be wave, particle, and energy. Humans are also Spirit , soul and body , Water is ice , water and steam and so on.
3. BIBLICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE TRINITY
a) One God (Monotheism):
Deuteronomy 6:4: "The Lord our God, the Lord is one."
Isaiah 45:5: "I am the LORD, and there is no other."
b) THE FATHER IS GOD:
1 Corinthians 8:6: "…one God, the Father, from whom all things came…"
c) THE SON IS GOD:
John 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God."
John 20:28: Thomas said to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”
d) THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD:
Acts 5:3–4: Lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God.
1 Corinthians 3:16: The Spirit dwells in believers, making them God’s temple.
e) ALL THREE IN ONE SCENE:
Matthew 3:16–17 (Baptism of Jesus): Jesus is baptized, the Spirit descends like a dove, the Father speaks from heaven.
Matthew 28:19: "…baptizing them in the name (singular) of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
4. EARLY CHURCH BELIEF
The early Christians fought heresies by defending the Trinity:
Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325): Affirmed Jesus is fully God.
Council of Constantinople (A.D. 381): Affirmed the deity of the Holy Spirit.
5. WHY IT MATTERS
The Trinity protects the truth of the gospel — only the Father can send, only the Son can die for sin, and only the Spirit can regenerate and empower.
Denying the Trinity leads to a false god, a false Jesus, and a false gospel (2 Corinthians 11:4).It is like denying that man is spirit , soul , body .
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and boldness to preach the gospel.
PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome poverty.
