PERFECTING HOLINESS IN THE FEAR OF GOD

Good -Life Devotional; PERFECTING HOLINESS IN THE FEAR OF GOD

 By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

2 Corinthians 7:1 (AMP) declares, “Therefore, since we have these great and wonderful promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, completing holiness [living a consecrated life—a life set apart for God’s purpose] in the fear of God.” This verse is rooted in the previous chapter, 2 Corinthians 6:17, which commands, “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.” Paul is teaching that the Christian life is one of separation from moral and spiritual defilement—both external and internal. This is a condition for the fulfilment of God's promises in our lives .

The phrase “cleanse ourselves” does not imply salvation by works but a response to God’s promises (2 Corinthians 6:16–18). True holiness is not legalism but devotion, motivated by reverence for God. Jesus taught similarly in Mark 7:23, where He explained that “all these evil things come from within and defile a person,” affirming the need for inward purification.

The “fear of God” is a reverential awe that moves believers to pursue holiness (Proverbs 16:6). Hebrews 12:14 reinforces this call: “Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.” Likewise, Romans 12:1 urges believers to “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God.”

In a world increasingly tolerant of sin, Christians are called to live distinctively. This passage defends the necessity of sanctification, both as a response to God's grace and as evidence of true discipleship. The gospel does not only save—it sanctifies.

In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and sanctification of spirit soul and body.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to live in holiness.
