Good -Life Devotional: YOUR BODY IS GOD’S TEMPLE: TREAT IT AS SUCH
Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
The Bible clearly teaches that the true temple of God is not a building, but the believer’s body. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16). Again, 1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us, “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own.” This sacred truth is repeated in 2 Corinthians 6:16: “For you are the temple of the living God.”
Yet in many parts of the world—especially in Africa—modern preachers exploit the ignorance of their congregations by investing billions into elaborate cathedrals. They wrongly label these buildings as “God’s temple,” contrary to Scripture. Acts 17:24 says, “God, who made the world and everything in it...does not dwell in temples made with hands.”
In nations like Nigeria, this distortion has contributed to deepening poverty. Capital that could support businesses and economic empowerment is funneled into extravagant buildings with huge maintenance costs, yielding no economic or spiritual return. These preachers live luxuriously while their congregations suffer, with some of the lowest GDP per capita globally.
God does not dwell in buildings, mountains, or a geographic location. He dwells in you. This understanding should lead to reverence for your body, integrity in worship, and stewardship of resources. Let us honor God by treating our bodies as His temple and resisting religious deception.
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and true worship in the Spirit.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome evil manipulations.
