Good -Life Devotional : MORTIFY THE EARTHLY NATURE, PUT ON THE NEW MAN
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
In Colossians 3:5, believers are commanded to "put to death therefore your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry" (AMP). These fleshly tendencies wage war against the soul (1 Peter 2:11) and must be mortified daily. Paul continues in verses 8–9 urging Christians to put off anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language, and lying. These characteristics are incompatible with the new life in Christ.
Instead, we are instructed in Colossians 3:12–13 to put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving as the Lord forgave us. This transformation is possible as we are “renewed in knowledge after the image of our Creator” (Colossians 3:10). The new man is not a result of self-effort but of God’s Word working in us. As Psalm 119:11 says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
The key to victorious Christian living is to meditate daily on Scripture (Joshua 1:8). The Word of God exposes sin (Hebrews 4:12), renews the mind (Romans 12:2), and builds faith (Romans 10:17). The more we know Christ, the more we are transformed into His likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Commit today to kill the old nature, put off the sinful habits, and clothe yourself with Christlike virtues through daily fellowship with God's Word. Only then will we truly walk as new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and commitment to walk in the newness of life in Jesus Christ.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to heal the sick .
