Good -Life Devotional:

GOD SENDS JUDGMENT AGAINST ANTI-DEMOCRATIC OPPRESSION

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

In Ezekiel 11:1–2, the prophet is taken in the Spirit to Jerusalem’s east gate, where the Lord reveals twenty-five prominent leaders who manipulate governance, twist justice, and “devise mischief” to oppress the righteous. Their corruption eroded public trust, undermined justice, and—most tragically—resulted in the death of innocent people, as reflected in verse 6: “You have multiplied your slain in this city.” When leaders subvert due process and weaponize power, Scripture teaches that such decay eventually leads to the suffering of God’s people.

God’s response to this anti-democratic rebellion against righteousness is severe: “I will bring a sword upon you” (Ezek. 11:8–10). In biblical language, the “sword” often refers to foreign invaders, instruments of divine judgment. This same pattern appears in Isaiah 13:17, where God declares He will “stir up the Medes”—a violent, terrifying force—to humble the arrogant and stop abuses of power (Isa. 13:11). Scripture does not glorify violence, but it reveals a sobering truth: when rulers exalt wickedness, God may allow hostile forces to break their pride.

Yet judgment is never God’s final desire. He calls nations to repentance, justice, and accountability. Democracy collapses when citizens and leaders abandon righteousness. Therefore, believers must uphold godly standards and insist on leaders of integrity, just as the early church chose “men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3). Proverbs 29:2 affirms this truth: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.”

To preserve peace, justice, and life, nations must return to God and uphold righteous leadership.

In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and righteous governance.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome poverty.
