Good -Life Devotional: QUALITY OF OUR RELATIONSHIP OUTWEIGHS THE QUANTITY OF OUR POSSESSIONS.
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
“Better is a dinner of herbs where love is present than a fattened ox served with hatred.” — Proverbs 15:17 (AMP)
Scripture gently but firmly corrects our perception of value. Proverbs 15:17 reminds us that the quality of our relationships and the presence of love outweigh the quantity of our possessions. A simple meal seasoned with love is richer in God’s sight than a grand banquet filled with hatred, strife, and spiritual emptiness. This truth confronts today’s culture, which equates success with wealth and abundance. God measures life differently: love, righteousness, and peace are the true treasures of the believer.
Hebrews 11:24–26 gives us a powerful example of this wisdom lived out. Moses, though raised amid the unimaginable wealth and power of Pharaoh’s palace, made a deliberate choice. He refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. Why? Because the lavish “fattened ox” of Egypt was served with spiritual hatred—hostility toward God’s people and the ways of righteousness. Moses discerned that no earthly comfort could compensate for the loss of fellowship with God or the compromise of his calling.
He chose instead to identify with God’s oppressed people, embracing what seemed like the “herbs”—a life of hardship, humility, and sacrifice. Yet in God’s economy, Moses chose the richer portion, for Scripture says he esteemed “the reproach of Christ as greater riches than the treasures of Egypt.” He understood that temporary pleasures cannot outweigh eternal rewards.
This devotional truth calls us to examine our own choices. Do we pursue peace, love, and holiness even when it costs us something? Are we willing to value Christ more than comfort? The world may offer us “fattened oxen,” but if they come with spiritual compromise, they are empty.
Today, choose the humble path that honors God. For where love, righteousness, and obedience dwell, there is true wealth—and everlasting reward.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power for contentment.
