HE HAS NOT GIVEN YOU TO UNTIMELY DEATH

You are  delivered from the power of the grave because of the anointing of God's favour upon you.

Good -Life Devotional:

HE HAS NOT GIVEN YOU TO UNTIMELY DEATH

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

PSALM 118:17–18

“I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over to death.” — Psalm 118:17–18 (AMP)

This passage stands as a triumphant declaration of divine preservation and purpose. It affirms that God’s dealings with humanity, though disciplinary, are redemptive rather than destructive. The psalmist acknowledges divine chastening — evidence of God’s love, not His wrath (Hebrews 12:6). His affliction was severe, yet it was restrained by mercy. God’s discipline aims to correct and refine, not to annihilate.

This verse finds ultimate fulfillment in Christ Jesus, who though “chastened” through suffering (Isaiah 53:5), was not given over to death permanently — His resurrection demonstrated God’s power over the grave (Acts 2:24). Thus, the believer’s confidence mirrors Christ’s: though pressed and corrected, we live to declare the works of the Lord (2 Corinthians 4:8–10).

This verse refutes fatalistic worldviews that see suffering as meaningless. The Christian worldview presents suffering as a divine instrument for growth and testimony. God’s people may be disciplined, but never forsaken (Psalm 37:24). When unbelievers question the goodness of God in hardship, Psalm 118 reminds us that discipline and preservation coexist — proof of a loving, purposeful Creator.

The believer’s response is worship: to live with the intent of declaring the Lord’s works — His healing, deliverance, and faithfulness. “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). Life itself becomes an apologetic — a testimony that God’s mercy triumphs over judgment.

In our daily prayers let us seek a healthy appetite for God's word and discernment to know the Lord's discipline.

PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome the fear of  death.
