Good-Life Devotional:

THE SPIRIT BEHIND THE SWORD: CONTRASTING ISLAMIC JIHAD TEXTS WITH BIBLICAL TRUTH.( PART 1)

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

Throughout history, violent jihadist movements have rooted their ideology in specific Qur’anic verses and hadiths they believe command them to wage war against unbelievers despite opposition by moderate Muslims who see differently.  Verses such as Qur’an 8:12, where Allah says, “I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve; strike them on their necks and strike every fingertip of them,” become the core fuel of extremist theology. Likewise, Qur’an 9:29 commands fighting those who do not accept Islam “until they pay the jizya with willing submission.” Certain hadiths intensify this mindset: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah…” (Sahih Bukhari 25).

The Qur'an validates the Torah and injeel contained in the bible.. God’s Word—the Bible—reveals a radically different spirit. Jesus declared, “For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” (Luke 9:56, AMP). When Peter attempted to defend Jesus with a sword, Jesus rebuked him: “Put your sword back… for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52, AMP).

Instead of calling believers to physically fight unbelievers, Scripture teaches spiritual warfare:

“The weapons of our warfare are not physical… but they are mighty before God.” (2 Corinthians 10:4, AMP).

This is a reminder that true conquest is spiritual, not violent, and the kingdom of God advances through truth, love, prayer, and righteous living—not by force. Jesus, unlike the militant commands found in some Islamic texts, offers a kingdom built on sacrifice, peace, and redemption. As followers of Christ, we shine brightest when we demonstrate His heart in a world darkened by violence.

In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and the salvation of extremists

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome terrorism.
