Good -Life Devotional:

SIX STEPS FOR HAVING GOOD COMMUNICATION IN RELATIONSHIPS.

7/6/24

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

2 Samuel 19:7 "Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.'

King David's son Absolom had risen against him in battle but failed resulting in his death. King David proceeded to mourn the death of his adversary to the chagrin of his soldiers . This created a strong disaffected amongst them that would have led to his downfall. An advise from a loyal friend was able to quell the situation through good communication skills. Poor communication is a major destroyer of great relationships and marriages.

Effective communication is essential for building and maintaining strong relationships. Here are six steps to enhance communication, inspired by the Bible

1. **Listen Actively**: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry" (James 1:19). Active listening involves giving full attention, understanding, and responding thoughtfully to others.

2. **Speak Truthfully**: "Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body" (Ephesians 4:25). Honesty builds trust and clarity in communication.

3. **Use Gentle Words**: "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). Gentle words promote peace and understanding, preventing conflicts.

4. **Be Patient and Kind**: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud" (1 Corinthians 13:4). Patience and kindness in communication reflect love and respect for others.

5. **Seek to Understand**: "Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others" (Philippians 2:4). Strive to understand the perspectives and feelings of others to foster mutual respect.

6. **Encourage One Another**: "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up" (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Positive and uplifting communication strengthens relationships and supports personal growth.

By applying these biblical principles, we can cultivate meaningful and effective communication in our daily interactions.

In our daily prayers ask God for wisdom for communication with the persons we meet .

Prayer: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome fear.
