Good-Life Devotional:

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN  SOOTHSAYERS AND TRUE PROPHETS. TAKE HEED .

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

  Acts 8:10-11,18-19

To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

A soothsayer has the ability to bewitch an entire city this is the reason why despite the prevalence of so -called prophets in Nigeria crime and poverty is the rise because most of them are soothsayers.

A soothsayer and a true prophet serve distinctly different roles, particularly in the context of biblical teachings. A soothsayer, often associated with fortune-telling, divination, and the occult, relies on methods such as astrology, omens, or psychic abilities to predict future events. Their practices are typically rooted in human or demonic knowledge, not divine revelation. In contrast, a true prophet is chosen by God to deliver His messages, often calling people to repentance and revealing God’s plans and purposes. True prophets speak by the authority and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, offering guidance aligned with God’s will. They often speak on the need to be filled with the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit and pursuit of righteousness and peace .

The Bible explicitly warns against consulting soothsayers. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, God commands: "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD." This passage highlights God's disdain for practices that rely on sources other than Him.

Moreover, Isaiah 8:19 cautions, "When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?" This verse underscores the folly and spiritual danger of seeking guidance from soothsayers instead of God.

While soothsayers seek to predict the future through forbidden practices, true prophets convey God's truth through divine inspiration. The Bible’s stern warnings serve to guide believers away from false sources of knowledge and toward reliance on God's wisdom and revelation.

Soothsayers will not enter heaven ( Read Mathew 7;21-23)

Prayer: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power over soothsayers.Amen
