Good -Life Devotional:

FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION USING THE HOLY COMMUNION WITH THE RIGHT PRAYERS

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

In the early Church, the Holy Communion was more than a symbolic act; it was a profound expression of unity and holiness that played a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the community. Acts 2 and 4 depict a Church where believers shared everything in common, living in mutual care and transparency. The breaking of bread, a reference to the Holy Communion, was central to this fellowship, embodying the spiritual and communal purity they aspired to uphold.

However, in Acts 5, the story of Ananias and Sapphira highlights the consequences of corruption within the community. Their deceit in withholding part of the proceeds from the sale of their property while pretending to give it all led to their sudden demise . This incident served as a stern warning that dishonesty and corruption were incompatible with the holy fellowship symbolized by the Communion.

Paul, in 1 Corinthians 11:29-30, warns against taking the Communion in an unworthy manner, linking it to sickness and death among the Corinthians. He emphasizes that partaking in the body and blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:16) demands holiness. Similarly, 2 Corinthians 6:14 and 13:14 underscore the need for purity and unity in the Church, reinforcing that corruption cannot coexist with the sacred act of Communion.

We should request that our pastors employ the right prayers while administering the Holy Communion in the fight against institutionalised corruption in our churches and society .

Ananias and Sapphira were partakers of the holy communion in the early church and Peter recognised they had violated the terms of the covenant of the blood and body of Christ. A simple act of repentance would have saved them but instead they opposed the Holy Spirit and paid dearly for it. This unfortunate event  ironically resulted in an increase in the integrity of the community Acts 5:11 says

" And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things."

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome corruption.
