Good-Life Devotional:

THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF PARTAKING IN THE HOLY COMMUNION WHILE RECIEVING BRIBES

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

The act of taking Holy Communion, also known as the Lord's Supper, is a sacred tradition in Christianity. However, the Bible warns of the painful consequences of partaking in this sacrament without discerning the Lord's body. In 1 Corinthians 11:27-30, Paul cautions, "Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep."

This passage emphasizes the need for self-examination and reverence. Failure to recognize the significance of Christ's sacrifice leads to spiritual consequences, including weakness, sickness, and even death. It serves as a sobering reminder that Communion is not a ritual to be taken lightly but with deep respect and understanding of its profound meaning. The act symbolizes Christ's broken body and shed blood, and not discerning this properly is seen as a grave offense before God.

It has been established that the Christian who takes bribes is in opposition to God's kingdom ( see Isaiah 33:14-17, Acts 24;26) they promote injustice and corruption. This is what the new testament describes as not discerning the lord's body in 1 Corinthians 11:29) The word ':discerning ' is the Greek word diakrinō , it means to oppose , discriminate, be partial . Frustrating a Christian because he or she refused to give  you a bribe makes taking the holy communion counter productive to the bribe taker .  Holy communion is not for such unrepentant persons . An example of this was Judas Iscariot who took a bribe to betray Jesus. It resulted in depression or damnation leading to suicide . Another case was prophet Balaam in the old testament who took a bribe to curse Israal. It was customary in old testament times to use wine and bread in prayers as in the case of Abraham and Melchizedek (Gen 14:18) it was an act of covenant with God. Balaam violated the terms of the covenant and was terminated in Numbers 13:22.

This is one of the major  reasons behind the life of misery suffered by many retirees who in their active years in office destroyed and frustrated many Christians through bribery . Galatians 6:7-8

[7]Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

[8]For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting."

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation. Amen
