GOOD GOVERNANCE IS ACCOUNTABLE TO CITIZENS

Proverbs 29:4 - "The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it."

   This verse of scriptures teaches just rulership strengthens a nation, while corruption, symbolized by accepting bribes, weakens it. The fight against corruption starts from the apex of leadership. 

    Good governance, rooted in accountability to citizens, finds a powerful model in the biblical figure of Prophet Samuel. Samuel's life exemplifies how leaders should remain answerable to those they serve, reflecting God’s expectations for just leadership.

Samuel’s story, as told in 1 Samuel 12:3-5, highlights his accountability. Before the people of Israel, Samuel declared, "Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded?" The people testified to his integrity, underscoring his commitment to transparency and justice. This open accounting to the citizens established trust and upheld his legitimacy as a leader.

Moreover, in 1 Samuel 8:10-18, Samuel warned Israel about the potential tyranny of a king, foreseeing the dangers of unchecked power. His willingness to challenge the desires of the people, even when unpopular, showed his dedication to their long-term welfare, not merely their immediate desires.

In the same way, good governance today requires leaders who, like Samuel, are transparent, just, and deeply committed to serving their people. Leaders should regularly account for their actions, ensuring their decisions promote the common good, protecting citizens from exploitation and corruption. Samuel’s example remains a timeless guide for leaders to prioritize accountability in governance.
