THE DEFIANCE OF MAN SHALL PRAISE GOD

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

2 Chronicles 10:15-16

[15]So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the Cause Was Of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

[16]And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents."

Psalm 76:10 states, "Surely the wrath of man shall praise You; With the remainder of wrath You shall gird Yourself."

This verse suggests that even human defiance and anger can ultimately serve to glorify God, highlighting His sovereignty and the way He can use all circumstances for His purpose.

A biblical illustration of this concept is found in the reign of Rehoboam, Solomon's son. In 1 Kings 12:13-15, Rehoboam rejects wise counsel, responding harshly to the people of Israel, which leads to the division of the kingdom. This defiant act, while seemingly a setback, was part of God's larger plan, as prophesied by Ahijah the Shilonite (1 Kings 11:29-31). The split in the kingdom was a judgment on Solomon's idolatry, demonstrating that God’s will prevails even through human decisions that appear contrary to His purposes.

Rehoboam's story, coupled with Psalm 76:10, underscores a profound truth: human defiance cannot thwart God's plans. Instead, it often becomes a means through which God's greatness and justice are revealed. This perspective encourages believers to trust in God's ultimate control, knowing that He can use even human wrath to bring about His praise and fulfill His purposes. In our daily prayers we should seek for the institution of a righteous culture in our nation by any means possible.
