FOOD SUBSIDY BY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN A TIME OF EMERGENCY

You shall not be stranded but   continue to make great progress because of the anointing of God's favour upon you.

Good -Life Devotional:

FOOD SUBSIDY BY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN A TIME OF EMERGENCY

Joel 2:26 "And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed."

While engagement in a robust agricultural programme aimed at self-sufficiency in food production remains the best option in ensuring food security, a short term measure to ameliorate the sufferings of the people needs to be in place by local governments at the various wards .

Local governments can play a pivotal role in reducing food costs by purchasing in bulk from regions where food is cheaper and then selling it at a subsidized rate at the wards through the supervision of the councillors . This approach can make essential items like grains, vegetables, and fruits more affordable for low-income families. By buying in large quantities, the government can negotiate better prices, effectively driving down the cost of food. These savings can then be passed on to the community, helping to alleviate food insecurity.

This strategy is not only practical but also aligns with biblical principles of compassion and stewardship. Proverbs 31:8-9 encourages us to "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." By ensuring that food is accessible and affordable, local governments are acting in the spirit of this scripture, advocating for the well-being of their citizens.

Furthermore, in Deuteronomy 15:11, we are reminded, "There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land." Subsidizing food costs is a tangible way for governments to fulfill this command, ensuring that no one goes hungry.

This should be a short term measure in times of emergency and sales should strictly be for individual consumption and limited to a certain quantity per family or household to avoid profiteering by middlemen.

There should be transparency in the purchase of the food items from the producers by the local government which could be attained by instituting a monitoring mechanism through the  bureau of public enterprises at the local government.

PRAYER; Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to feed the poor. Amen
