Good -Life Devotional:

PROPER USE OF THE LAND USE ACT IN ENSURING  FOOD SECURITY

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

Proverbs 28:19

" He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough."

The ever increasing rural - urban migration as a result of insecurity and lack of opportunities in the rural areas is a major reason for food insecurity. Less land is cultivated for food production for the teaming population in our cities resulting in inflation in the prices of food items  due to ever increasing demand .

It is against this backdrop the a proper implementation of the land use act by local governments has become imperative in ensuring food security so more people can go into farming. A robust.  security apparatus has to also be in place to secure farmers and their produce .

The Land Use Act plays a crucial role in ensuring food security at the local government level. By effectively managing land distribution and utilization, local governments can promote sustainable agricultural practices and support food production. The Act grants local authorities the power to allocate land for farming, ensuring that fertile land is used to grow food rather than for non-agricultural purposes.

In ensuring food security, local governments should prioritize the needs of their communities, providing access to land for smallholder farmers who are the backbone of food production. They should also enforce laws that prevent the misuse of agricultural land, ensuring that it is preserved for future generations.

Biblical principles support this responsible stewardship. Proverbs 27:23 advises, "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds." This verse highlights the importance of diligent management, which can be applied to land use. Additionally, in Genesis 2:15, God placed man in the Garden of Eden "to work it and take care of it," underscoring the responsibility to cultivate and protect the land. By aligning land use practices with these principles, local governments can effectively contribute to food security, fulfilling their role as stewards of the earth.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome poverty.
