Good-Life Devotional: GOOD GOVERNANCE IN A NATION STARTS FROM THE FAMILY

Good governance does not begin in government halls—it begins at home. A family is the first unit of leadership, and how it functions directly influences how a nation operates. Scripture emphasizes that a leader must “manage his own household well, keeping his children under control with dignity” (1 Timothy 3:4 AMP). Titus 2:7 also instructs us to “show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works.” When children observe integrity, humility, and love in their parents, they imitate these virtues. Conversely, children raised by disrespectful or rebellious parents often reflect the same behavior, leading to broken homes and, ultimately, broken societies.

Sadly, many adults continue cycles of dishonor—disrespecting their own parents, spouses, and children. Such patterns weaken the moral fiber of families and ripple into the nation. Scripture warns us about this: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right” (Ephesians 6:1), and “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12).

Good governance also requires discernment in relationships. 1 Corinthians 5:11 commands believers to avoid those who call themselves Christians yet live immorally. 2 Thessalonians 3:6 warns against associating with believers who walk in disobedience to God’s Word. Additionally, 1 Corinthians 15:33 reminds us, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”

Families must therefore guide members—especially children—in choosing righteous companions (Proverbs 13:20), cultivating fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7), and walking in truth (3 John 1:4). A nation’s strength lies in the character built at home.

 In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and good governance in our families.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to raise a godly family.
