Good-Life Devotional: THE EXTORTIONER SHALL NOT ENTER HEAVEN

Jesus Christ strongly condemned extortion, particularly among religious leaders. In Matthew 23:25 (AMP), He rebuked the scribes and Pharisees: “Woe to you…for you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but within they are full of extortion and robbery and self-indulgence.”

The English word extortion means obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats. The Greek term used here is “harpagē” (ἁρπαγή), which denotes plunder, robbery, or greed-driven seizure.

Modern preachers often commit spiritual extortion by demanding offerings, "seeds," or material possessions in exchange for miracles, healings, or breakthroughs. This violates Matthew 10:8, where Jesus commanded, “Freely you have received; freely give.” The idea that blessings can be bought is false and contradicts 1 Peter 1:18, which says, “You were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver or gold.” Isaiah 45:13 reminds us that salvation is given “without price.”

Extortion destroys nations. Governmental corruption raises the cost of goods, leading to hyperinflation. Traders, under pressure, shift costs to consumers, breeding poverty and anger. Societies plagued by extortion often face increased crime and terrorism, as desperation and injustice escalate.

False doctrines suggesting God's grace permits giving proceeds of extortion to churches are demonic. Scripture warns in 1 Corinthians 6:10, “Extortioners… shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Likewise, Ezekiel 22:12-13 and Micah 3:11 condemn those who take bribes and extort in the name of religion.

Let no one be deceived: God is not mocked (Galatians 6:7). The extortioner shall not enter heaven.

 In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and boldness to speak against corruption in society.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome corruption.
