Good -Life Devotional: HOW CAN JESUS CHRIST BE GOD AND BE THE SON OF MAN ?
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
.SON OF MAN
The title "Son of Man" is one of the most distinctive ways Jesus refers to Himself in the New Testament. The phrase carries deep theological significance and appears in various contexts throughout the Bible, particularly in the Gospels.
OLD TESTAMENT BACKGROUND:
The term "Son of Man" has roots in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). One of the key references is in Daniel 7:13-14, where Daniel describes a vision of "one like a son of man" coming with the clouds of heaven and being given authority, glory, and sovereign power by God. This figure is a messianic figure with divine authority, and this prophecy becomes a backdrop for understanding Jesus' use of the title.
IN THE GOSPELS:
Jesus frequently refers to Himself as the "Son of Man" in various settings, and this term has multiple layers of meaning.
1. HUMANITY: "Son of Man" emphasizes Jesus' full humanity. In Aramaic (the language Jesus spoke), "son of man" can simply mean a human being. By using this term, Jesus identifies Himself with humanity, stressing His experience as a fully human person who suffers, feels pain, and lives within human limitations.
2. MESSIANIC IDENTITY: Jesus' use of "Son of Man" echoes the messianic figure in Daniel 7. When Jesus refers to Himself in this way, He subtly points to His role as the awaited Messiah who will have authority and dominion, though this is often veiled until later in His ministry. In passages like Matthew 24:30 and Mark 14:62, Jesus connects Himself to the divine figure in Daniel, highlighting His ultimate return in glory and judgment.
3. SUFFERING AND SACRIFICE: Jesus frequently links the title "Son of Man" with His suffering, death, and resurrection. In Mark 8:31, Jesus says that the Son of Man must suffer, be rejected, killed, and rise again. This shows how Jesus redefines messianic expectations—not as a conquering ruler but as a suffering servant who will redeem humanity through His sacrificial death.
4. ESCHATOLOGICAL ROLE: Jesus also uses the title to refer to His future role in judgment and the consummation of God's kingdom. For instance, in Matthew 25:31, Jesus describes the Son of Man coming in His glory to judge the nations. This aligns with the image in Daniel of the Son of Man receiving eternal authority and establishes Jesus' ultimate role as judge and king in the end times.
THEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Humanity And Divinity: The title "Son of Man" uniquely holds together both Jesus' humanity and His divinity. While emphasizing His human nature, it also points to His exalted role in God's redemptive plan.
MESSIAH AND SUFFERING Servant: By calling Himself the Son of Man, Jesus redefines common Jewish expectations of the Messiah as a political deliverer. Instead, He reveals Himself as the suffering servant who will bring salvation through humility, sacrifice, and eventual glory.
FULFILLMENT OF PROPHECY: Jesus' use of the title connects His life and mission to Old Testament prophecies, especially Daniel’s vision, demonstrating that He fulfills God’s promises of a Messiah who would establish an everlasting kingdom.
"Son of Man" is a multifaceted title that reveals Jesus as both fully human and fully divine, the suffering servant, and the exalted Messiah who will bring God's kingdom to fulfillment.
In our daily prayers we should seek a healthy appetite for God's word and revelation of his divine nature .
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to defend the gospel.
