Good -Life Devotional: WHAT IS SO EXTRAORDINARY ABOUT  SEXUAL SIN ?

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

1 Corinthians 6:15

[15]Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid."

1 Corinthians 6:18 in the Amplified Bible reads:

"Run away from sexual immorality [in any form, whether thought or behavior, whether visual or written]. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the one who is sexually immoral sins against his own body."

These verses are often used to support discussions about the nature of sin, particularly sexual immorality, and its unique impact on the individual. Here are key  points:

1. Holistic View of the Body and Spirit

This verse highlights the Christian view of the human body as not just a physical entity but as part of a holistic self that includes body, soul, and spirit. Sexual sin, unlike other sins, is seen to uniquely defile the body, which is meant to be a temple of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 6:19). From a scriptural  perspective, this verse underscores the sanctity of the body and the call to honor it as a dwelling place of God.

2. Uniqueness of Sexual Sin

The verse suggests that sexual immorality is different from other sins because it affects the person’s body directly.   Sexual sin often brings emotional, psychological, and relational consequences, sometimes more intensely than other sins. This unique impact aligns with Christian ethics on relationships, sexuality, and purity. It is an act of idol worship, the word harlot is the Greek word 'pornē ' it means a Trumpet , an idolater. Such persons are noisemakers who open the doors to idol worship in the church .

3. Protection and Respect for the Body

God’s call to flee from sexual immorality is not arbitrary but rooted in love and protection for the believer. Sexual immorality can lead to broken relationships, emotional pain, and even physical consequences. In this view, the command is understood as God’s way of encouraging believers to respect their bodies and relationships.

4. Reflection of Holiness

Sexual purity is seen as a reflection of a Christian’s commitment to live a holy life. One could argue that obeying this command is a way of demonstrating a life set apart for God. Resisting sexual immorality is therefore a choice to reflect God’s holiness in a tangible, visible way.

5. Relational Context in Marriage

This scripture gives us the broader biblical context that teaches sexual intimacy as something reserved for the covenant of marriage (see Genesis 2:24, Hebrews 13:4). Within marriage, sexual relations are seen as healthy and sacred, but outside of it, they are considered destructive. Thus, scriptures advocate for this ideal to promote relational health and stability.

This verse ultimately  shows the value Jesus  places on purity, the human body, and relationships, portraying these as aspects of a life that honors God.

In our daily prayers we should seek for purity through a healthy appetite for God's word and humility to stay under godly authority.

PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins. against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation.
